So you're probably wondering what it takes?
You don't need to have any experience sailing, just a good attitude and a willingness to help out a bit, depending on what your skills are and what you feel comfortable doing. If you want to learn about sailing, we can help you. If you would rather enjoy 'the experience' and stay clear of the sailing, that is fine too. There are other things you could do to help out. Crew must share costs of food, drinks and pay for their own visas and transport costs associated in getting to and from the boat.
Coastal Cruising:
When we are cruising the coast, or at anchor our lifestyle is pretty relaxed, although we try to make the most out of it. Every destination is different but we usually go to shore regularly to explore, provision, do laundry, hit up the local pub and meet people. We have some fun gear on the boat (snorkeling gear, SUP, surfboards, rackets, slack-line, fishing rods) so depending on the weather and location we usually try to get out and into the water. Island hopping and finding nice anchorages to stay is our way of slowly exploring and making the most of a place.
Passages:
When we are on the move (doing passages), we usually stick to a roster for watches. This means that while others sleep, you will be 'On Watch', keeping a lookout for a few hours (usually about 3 to 4 hours). Don't worry, it's super easy (we will explain everything). Its an enjoyable time to have the night sky to yourself and contemplate the stars. Being on passage can be challenging for some, whether it be because of sea sickness, boredom, or fear. I tend to read a lot of books on passage and find it can be quite meditative. The rewards of doing a passage include accumulating sea miles, opportunity to learn and practice sailing (we try to sail as much as possible), the experience of being removed from the normal world- no phone, no internet- just the crew, the boat, the wind, the sea and the sky.
